Scarborough Comes Together for Town Improvement Scheme

North Yorkshire Council has teamed up with residents, businesses, voluntary groups and partner organisations for a significant programme of improvement work in Scarborough to boost civic pride and revitalise run-down areas in the town.

A campaign highlighting these improvements and encouraging people to help keep Scarborough tidy will run throughout the summer, with almost 30 community clean up and litter picking events organised by partners including Keep Scarborough Tidy and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust planned. The council also has equipment available for anyone keen to organise their own event, so there are lots of ways people in the popular seaside town can get involved.

In addition to work routinely carried out in the resort, the long-term initiative includes more than 30 projects and will deliver real, visible change. From new litter bins and investment in state-of-the-art cleaning equipment to eye-catching murals, support for community-led activity and grants for shop front improvements. The programme follows confirmation from the Government that the Scarborough area will receive almost £20 million as part of a national programme of investment in towns.

A consultation process called ‘Let’s Talk Scarborough’ was carried out to identify people’s priorities. More than 60 per cent of respondents thought there was a need for a town centre that looked better, felt safer, and was more welcoming, with tidier shopfronts and well-maintained public spaces. As a result, the council allocated money to ensure progress is made in the interim period before proposals under the Plan for Neighbourhoods take shape.
